Explanation
Lewis warns that the scariest oppression comes from people who are sure they’re helping you. When rulers believe every rule is “for your own good,” they feel justified in controlling every corner of your life. You can’t appeal to their conscience, because they think conscience is on their side. They won’t tire, because they see their work as mercy. It’s a soft voice saying “trust me,” while the grip quietly tightens.
Real care respects your God-given freedom. Love persuades; it doesn’t coerce. A good society protects your right to choose, to learn, and yes, even to make mistakes. Forced virtue isn’t virtue at all—it shrinks souls, kills initiative, and turns adults into children. Lewis’s point is a friendly warning: beware of any power that promises to save you by running your life. Choose responsibility, consent, and genuine compassion instead.
